Stephen Wood papers, [ca. 1780-1800].

This collection contains Stephen Wood's arithmetic exercise book, commonly known in the eighteenth century as a ciphering book, and dates from circa 1780 to 1800. The volume includes a table of contents on the front page. Topics covered in the book include loss and gain, simple interest, permutation, vulgar fractions, geometrical progression, square roots, as well as others. A brief history of the Wood Family completes the volume.

Stephen Wood was born on March 21, 1765, the son of Dr. Stephen Wood and his second wife, Mary. Wood was afforded all the opportunities that wealth provided; he and his siblings were taught by a private tutor who emphasized a classical education. To supplement his classical education, Wood also studied medicine with his father. Wood and his wife had one son, Stephen W., born in 1810. Wood died at the age of 71 in the year 1826.
